General practice accounted for 65% of complaints made about NHS family health service providers in Scotland in 2016-17. 

 Overall, there were 5,014 complaints made in 2016-17, up 14% from the 4,396 the previous year. This compares to 1,414 complaints about pharmaceutical services (up 20%), 641 about dental services (down 1%), and 591 about ophthalmic services (up 14%).

Annual statistics published by Information Services Division of NHS Scotland indicate that, overall, complaints to NHS Scotland increased by 10% to 23,507 in 2016-17, with family health services complaints increasing by 14% to 7,660.

The annual statistics are compiled from returns from health service providers. “The overall family health services contractor return rate for 2016-17 was 80%. For medical, dental, pharmaceutical and ophthalmic this equates to 92%, 79%, 69% and 66% respectively,” says the report.
