The RCGP is asking for GP practices to send back any remaining petitions that have been collected under the ‘Put Patients First’ campaign.

While there was an August deadline for returning the petitions, the RCGP says that there is still time to submit any late ones as the College will not start counting the signatures until the lead up to the main party political conferences, starting with labour on September 21.

Additional forms can be downloaded from the Put Patients First website.

The petition is intended to support the RCGP and National Association for Patient Participation’s campaign to persuade UK governments to ensure that general practice receives 11% of the NHS budget by 2017.

The RCGP will hand over the petitions to the Prime Minister and First Ministers in each of the UK’s devolved nations.

In May, the RCGP sent petitions and accompanying posters showing a queue of patients waiting outside a surgery of the future to every GP practice in the UK asking patients to back calls for general practice to receive more funding in order to deliver excellent patient care.

GPs and practice teams currently conduct 90% of all NHS patient contacts yet now just receive 8.39% of the budget – the lowest share on record.
