New data relating to contractor GP average income before tax shows there was a decline of 0.9% in 2012-13 compared to the previous year.

According to figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre, the average before-tax income was £103,000. This continues a gradual fall, from a peak of £110,000 in 2005-06 when new contracting arrangements were introduced.

The data also shows individual average income before tax for GPs (contractor and salaried) was £92,000 in 2012-13 for those GPs working in a GMS or GPS (GPMS) practice. This is down 1.4% from £94,200 in 2011-12. The average income before tax for salaried GPs was £56,400, a slight decrease of 0.6%.

“The average gross earnings for contractor GPs was £271,800, an increase of 1.4 per cent on 2011/12,” says HSCIC. “However, their expenses rose by 2.9 per cent to £169,700. Contractor GPs form the majority of the GP workforce (around 80 per cent), from their gross earnings they pay for expenses such as premises and practice staff wages.”

Dr Chaand Nagpaul, chair of the BMA’s GP Committee, commented: “These figures demonstrate yet another real terms fall in GP income for the sixth year in a row. GPs have been singularly disadvantaged compared to other comparative NHS healthcare staff, in not receiving the government's intended pay awards.

“This highlights the government's continued inadequate investment in general practice, which is not keeping up with the rising expenses of running a GP practice to meet the increasing volumes of care GPs provide.

"GPs are also working in an increasingly pressurised working environment of rising patient demand and falling resources that is being exacerbated by the government's desire to move unfunded work from hospitals and into the community.

“Many GP premises are too cramped to provide adequate care with a recent BMA survey showing that four out of ten GPs saying their practice was struggling to provide basic GP services.

“These problems combined are increasingly affecting the GP workforce, with seven out of ten current GPs now saying they are considering early retirement and hundreds of vacancies being recorded for GP trainee posts this year.
