There will be an extra 15 training places for recently graduated doctors in Northern Ireland, due to additional investment in the Medical Foundation Programme. It means the total number of places available in Northern Ireland will be 267.

The expansion of the Foundation Programme at the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency in 2016-17 follows on from last week’s announcement of funding for an additional 20 GP training places.

Health Minister Simon Hamilton said: “Our Health and Social Care system is unique in the UK and I truly believe that we offer an excellent grounding for any medical staff at the start of their career. Each year our Foundation Programme is a popular choice with those graduating from university. By increasing the places available, we can bring more talented individuals into the HSC and showcase our health service as an employer of choice.”

The Foundation Programme is a two-year training programme for doctors who have recently graduated from medical school. It gives doctors in training experience in a range of different areas of medicine, and means that while they are responsible for caring for patients, this is under the supervision of more experienced doctors and other healthcare professionals. On completion, doctors choose an area of medicine in which to focus, which may be a specialty or in general practice.

Dr Shauna Fannin, Deputy Chair of the RCGP in Northern Ireland, said: “It is encouraging to see the Health Minister committing further resources for the training of medical graduates. The Foundation Programme provides a link between medical school and Specialist or General Practice Training. We very much welcome this additional investment, which could potentially lead to the training of much needed family doctors in the future.

“It is essential that the government continues to invest in the training and development of medical professionals here in Northern Ireland. Despite these welcome announcements, there is certainly more to be done to grow our local GP workforce and meet the growing demands of our ageing population.”
