A new arrangement will mean ‘golden hello’ payments for GPs are available for practices throughout Scotland where there are significant recruitment difficulties.

However, the changes to the golden hello scheme also mean that there is no automatic entitlement except in remote and rural and deprived areas.

Two new initiatives are also being introduced:

•    Costs associated with appraisal for sessional GPs will attract a participation payment of £350 per annual appraisal
•    GP returners will be supported to return to practice in NHS Scotland, using a proportion of the golden hello funding.

The changes to the golden hello scheme are set out in NHS Circular PCA (M) (2015) 01. It describes the circumstances in which a GP practice will be eligible for deprivation payment based on the percentage of patients living in ‘datazones’ defined as the 15% most deprived. This data can be obtained from ISD Scotland.
