A pilot scheme to reimburse the indemnity costs for GPs who commit to providing new out of hours sessions is getting underway.

An announcement, made in a CCG Bulletin under a ‘Winter pressures’ heading, says that NHS England is piloting the scheme with the main medical defence organisations (MDOs) “between now and April 7 2015.”

It advises: “GPs will need to pay their MDO but, by evidencing their payment to their employer, will get reimbursed the value of any additional premium they have had to pay.

“Providers recruiting GPs will need to cover this additional business expense but will be able to be reimbursed from their lead commissioner, who in turn will be reimbursed by NHS England.”

CCGs which are interested in learning more about the scheme have been asked to contact NHS England’s Primary Care Operations team.
