NEWS app for sepsis scoring available
June 4 2018
An app has been re-launched to help clinicians staff across NHS Wales calculate an individual's National Early Warning Score (NEWS).
The NEWS system has been standard in Welsh hospitals for a number of years to identify a patient’s risk of deteriorating health and the possibility of sepsis as the underlying cause. The app has now been made freely available for download on Android and Apple (iOS) and will enable the user to:
- calculate levels of risk;
- link with the SIRS criteria for sepsis;
- be aware of the need for earlier action.
Dr Richard Jones, consultant at Cwm Taf University Health Board and RRAILS clinical lead of the Rapid Response to Acute Illness (RRAILS) programme said: “NEWS is a structured way to ensure acutely deteriorating patients receive appropriate, timely care.
“All staff, whether they are hospital doctors and nurses, general practitioners, district nurses, paramedics or care home staff, can use the handy NEWS App to objectively assess severity and reliably communicate this to their colleagues.”
