The number of general practices declined by 110 in England in the period August 2014 to May 2015. While 28 practices opened, 138 were closed. At the end of May 2015, there were 7,935 general practitioner practices in England. In London there was one opening and 18 closures during that period.

The information was given in response to two Written Questions, from Joan Ryan, MP for Enfield North and Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish.

In his response, Health Minister Alistair Burt said: “It is important to note that these figures also include practice mergers and takeovers and do not provide an accurate representation of activity or service provision.

“In many cases, practices listed in these figures as having closed, will have in fact merged and will continue to see patients. In addition, in this time period the definition of general practice has changed to become a more stringent classification.”
