A telephone line for women from Northern Ireland seeking to have an abortion in England has been set up to centralise bookings.

The Department of Health and Social Care has said the centralised system will be run by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS). Callers will be directed to the most appropriate provider, based on:

  • the woman’s requirements;
  • her medical condition;
  • provider availability.

The phone number is 0333 234 2184.

The move follows the decision in Northern Ireland in June 2017 to permit women residents there to access abortion procedures in England free of any charge. DHSC says the available package of care includes:

  • a consultation with an abortion provider in England, including an assessment of whether the legal grounds for an abortion are met;
  • an abortion procedure;
  • HIV or sexually transmitted infection tests;
  • choice of contraception from the abortion provider;
  • support with travel costs if women face financial hardship.

The DHSC has also announced that it has finalised grant agreements with the three main abortion service providers – BPAS, Marie Stopes International, and NUPAS Ireland – to fund procedures for women from Northern Ireland.
