An updated NICE guideline has recommended that people with dementia should be offered a more active role in deciding care.

The guideline says health professionals should “encourage and enable people living with dementia to give their own views and opinions about their care.” This may require additional or modified ways of communicating (such as visual aids or simplified text). Health professionals should also consider using a structured tool to assess the likes and dislikes, routines and personal history of a person living with dementia.

NICE said that while everyone diagnosed with dementia should have an individual care plan that is reviewed at least once a year, “Age UK have found one in three people with the condition do not have a care plan.

“And data from more than 7,000 GP practices in England showed that, out of 450,000 people diagnosed with dementia in November 2017, under 300,000 had a care review in the preceding year. As dementia is a progressive condition, regular review is essential to ensure care needs continue to be met.”

The National Institute for Health Research has asked that people with dementia should also be told about dementia research opportunities.

“Currently it is estimated that 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, and the only way to find new and better ways to treat and care for those affected by the condition is to do more research. But researchers rely on people finding out about suitable studies and volunteering to take part,” said the NIHR

“The new recommendation from NICE makes clear that health and care professionals should help people living with dementia and their carers find out about opportunities to take part in research, and empower them to make their own decisions about getting involved. One straightforward way to do this is to provide information about Join Dementia Research.”
