Food supplement manufacturers are proposing to set the maximum dose of vitamin D at 75µg in food supplements. The proposal follows the continuing updating of data on upper safe limits. 

Three trade bodies – CRNUK, HFMA and PAGB – representing the majority of companies marketing food supplements in the UK, point out that the 75µg dose for their products is below the 100µg per day safe upper limit (UL) for intake.

The recommended UL has increased in stages from 25µg in 2003, to the 100µg recommended by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2010 and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) in 2012.

The trade bodies said the rationale for the 75µg/day level now proposed for food supplements takes into account:

  • the EFSA and IOM UL of 100µg/day for vitamin D;
  • intakes from food;
  • intakes from food including fortified food as well as future increases in intake resulting from increases in fortification practices, changing food habits and food choices;
  • an allowance for people taking a cod liver oil supplement as well as a multivitamin.
