A drug advisory for Marcain Polyamp Steripack 0.5% (bupivacaine hydrochloride) has been issued due to the administration advice included on labelling.

AstraZeneca has advised the MHRA that all batches issued since December 2012 are affected, with cartons and vial labels stating the product can be administered by intra-ocular administration. However, this route of administration is not appropriate for the 0.5% strength.

The ‘caution in use’ warning means that affected batches will continue to be distributed while the labelling is corrected, and that newly labelled stock is expected to be available from January 2016.

While the NHS Central Alerting System has indicated that it is unlikely that the product will be used in general practice or stocked by community pharmacies, the Scottish Executive Health Department has asked directors of pharmacy to bring the alert to the attention of community pharmacists and GPs.
