A package of resources enabling community pharmacies to offer a travel health service has been announced. 

 Valneva UK will launch the VIP (Valneva in Partnership) programme imminently. It will consist of an “all-inclusive programme of tools, assets and resources carefully designed to support pharmacies to offer a comprehensive travel health service.”

The programme provides participants “with the necessary proportional support to develop a comprehensive service that improves the health of UK travellers and fulfils the current unmet need within the industry.” Resources include:

  • a business analysis tool
  • Neva Travel Health Training
  • a travel health eTool
  • a desktop discussion aid
  • a referral scheme and clinic finder
  • specialist travel health nurse mentorship
  • marketing and communications support.

Over 70 million trips abroad are made from the UK but approximately 50% of travellers depart without seeking health advice, said Valneva. “Among those who do seek advice, a proportion commonly leave it too late to consult with a healthcare professional meaning many travellers are poorly protected.” As many as 60% of travellers can become ill as a result of travelling.

Valneva also believes that its VIP package may help boost community pharmacy business at a time when pharmacy funding cuts are being imposed by the Department of Health.

“The healthcare landscape in the UK is changing dramatically, and will continue to change over the coming years with providers struggling to meet the needs of their customers while also maintaining a viable business,” said Graham Thoms, Head of Commercial Operations UK, Ireland & Southern Europe, Valneva UK.

“The launch of the VIP programme is intended to be a win-win for travellers and pharmacists alike, providing greater access to comprehensive health services that travellers desperately need through supporting pharmacies in expanding their range of services.”
