LloydsPharmacy has announced that it will shoulder the 5% VAT cost on sanitary products, the so-called ‘tampon tax’.

A statement by its parent company Celesio said that it is reducing the cost of all sanitary products stocked by LloydsPharmacy by 5% with effect from August 15. In doing so, LloydsPharmacy claims to be “the first community pharmacy chain to drop the price of women’s sanitary products and effectively pay the VAT on behalf of its customers.”

Marketing Director Sarah Jezard said: “We recognise that sanitary items are essential for women and their wellbeing. As a trusted healthcare provider we want to ensure that our customers have better access to the products they need. That’s why we will reduce the price of our sanitary products by 5% to cover the VAT for our customers.”

Boots and some supermarket chains have indicated in the past that they will reduce the price of sanitary products following the Government announcement in 2016 indicating its intention to scrap the VAT.
