A Resized Quitting Smoking Image cbAugust 31 2017

Scotland has updated its smoking cessation service specification to reflect the change in status of varenicline.

NHS Circular PCA (P)(2017) 7 explains that a revised PGD template for the supply of varenicline through the Public Health Service (PHS) was issued to Health Boards in February 2017. This followed the removal of the black triangle on varenicline.

The service specification has now been updated “to reflect that community pharmacies may now, if determined by their Health Board’s Area Drug and Therapeutics Committee, supply varenicline as a first line option.”

Revisions have been made to the service specification including removal of the requirement for two previous quit attempts with NRT before varenicline may be supplied under the PHS. Also included are a Varenicline Clinical Risk Assessment Form and a GP letter template.
