PSNC has drawn up a timetable indicating how contractor payments will be affected by Category M price reductions over the next few months.

The new set of category M price reductions came into effect in the August Drug Tariff.

“At the beginning of October, a pharmacy would receive an advance payment for the dispensing month of August,” said PSNC. “This is an estimated payment, taking into account the pharmacy’s number of declared items for August, and the pharmacy’s average item value (AIV) from dispensing month of July. This means that the advance for August is likely to overstate the value of August’s prescriptions.”

The payment made in November will be the balance of the reimbursement and will take into account the advance payment which will be retained by NHS Prescription Services. “This is the point where the impact on contractors will be most significant as the balance for August will be lower than the recovery of the advance,” said PSNC.

“PSNC strongly advises contractors to analyse the impact on their finances. We hope the resources below will help contractors to better understand and plan.”

The advice from PSNC also includes a worked example illustrating how payments will be affected for an average volume pharmacy, whose AIV is reduced by 17p per item from dispensing month of August.
