Financial support for community pharmacy training in Scotland has been updated for 2017-18. NHS Circular: PCA (P)(2017) 11 sets out arrangements for claiming the funding for two aspects.

 Part A financial support provides up to £800 for pharmacy staff undergoing training for the following specific courses:

  • Pharmacy Services Level 2: NVQ/SVQ;
  • Pharmacy Services Level 3: NVQ/SVQ;
  • Accredited Checking Technician: NPA Accuracy in Dispensing Training Module or equivalent;
  • SQA Professional Development Award (PDA) in Final Accuracy Checking by Pharmacy Technicians

There has been a slight change to the arrangements for claiming the Part A funding this year with claims now having to be submitted by November 30 2017.

Part B is financial support to “facilitate effective uptake” of a new Over the Counter (OTC) Consultations training package. This will provide a one-off payment of £100 for contractors on the Pharmaceutical List as of January 1 2018 as a contribution towards releasing staff time to undertake the training pack.

The new workbook, ‘Improving the quality of over-the-counter (OTC) consultations’ will be distributed in February 2018. It will follow on from the ‘Effective management of over-the-counter (OTC) consultations’ training book issued to pharmacies earlier this year.

The new pack will expect community pharmacists to “engage their team members to develop their practice and knowledge. The resource will focus on OTC product requests, ie consultations which involve a customer/patient requesting a product by name, rather than seeking advice for the treatment of a condition or symptom. Product requests constitute the majority of OTC consultations and are associated with lower quality management compared with advice requests.”

Community Pharmacy Scotland has also flagged up the payment schedule.
