Community Pharmacy Scotland has published two key fact documents relating to the financial settlement for 2017-18 and the latest Unscheduled Care patient group direction.

The final settlement factsheet summarises this year’s funding arrangements and “draws attention to the key changes which may have an operational impact.” CPS says it is in the process of updating its Financial Framework document for pharmacy contractors which will be released next week.

For the unscheduled care PDG update, CPS says the latest version, v.23, has broadened the range of situations in which pharmacists can help people gain access to medicine when it is not possible or not practical to obtain a prescription.

“We have developed a short key facts document to summarise the most important changes made in this update, which remove most of the barriers to supply from the process. These should improve the patient journey and significantly reduce the time spent organising supplies in the pharmacy,” it said.

Among the points highlighted are:

  • how the meaning of “prescriber unavailable” has been clarified;
  • the medication requested does not have to be on the patient’s repeat list, but does have to have been prescribed before;
  • how the PGD will allow pharmacists to resolve several prescribing and supply issues independently.
