The total cost of medicines dispensed in England fell 0.41% between 2016 in 2017, from £9.204 billion to £9.167 billion. This is the second year of a decrease in Net Ingredient Cost (NIC) which peaked in 2015 at £9.267 billion.

NHS Digital’s new ‘Prescription Cost Analysis, England 2017’ report also shows that while total NIC fell, the number of prescriptions increased 0.15%, from 1.10 billion in 2016 to 1.11 billion items in 2017.

The data is set out in a series of tables, but includes listings of the top 20 drugs dispensed in terms of items and NIC:
