A Wales MapMay 24 2018

The number of prescription items dispensed in Wales increased 0.2% from 80.3 million in 2016 to 80.4 million in 2017. The slight increase continues a slowing trend in growth seen over the past three years.

Annual figures published by the Welsh Government indicate that an average of 25.8 prescriptions were dispensed per head of population, higher than the average of 22.3 in Northern Ireland, 20.0 in England and 19.2 in Scotland.

Net ingredient cost (NIC) of all prescriptions dispensed in the community during 2017 was £578.1 million, “very similar to the cost in 2016.” In 2017, the NIC per item (mean) was £7.19, 1p less than in 2016 and £2.19 less than in 2000. “Apart from 2015, the net ingredient cost per item has fallen every year since 2004,” said the report.

Cardiovascular system medicines accounted for the largest group in terms of prescription items at 23.4 million, but central nervous system drugs had the largest cost at £123.6 million. Omeprazole was the most commonly prescribed active with 2.6 million items dispensed in 2017.
