The new Vaccination Services with the use of patient group directions (PGDs) Declaration of Competence (DoC) is now available.

It merges the two previous separate DoC frameworks for vaccinations: the NHS Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Advanced Service and other locally commissioned Immunisation services.

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education has the new DoC on its website and says the system should reduce the amount of work needed in completing the DoC for pharmacists providing vaccinations.

“It is recommended that you revisit the DoC every two years, so some people may not need to complete the new, merged DoC if they completed the practical training and DoC for the 2017-18 influenza season,” said CPPE.

“As the new DoC covers all vaccinations, the competency framework should be revisited and the statement of declaration re-signed whenever a service for a different vaccination is introduced.”

In addition to the requirement to complete the DoC every two years, “the requirement for healthcare professionals to complete an annual update, which can be self-directed learning rather than face-to face training, remains.”

In addition, CPPE points out that the 2018 National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Practitioners include a new requirement for supervised clinical practice following training. Both the merged DoC and the statement of declaration have been amended to include a clause relating to supervision.

PSNC has published Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) which explain this requirement in more detail.

In addition, PSNC is inviting pharmacy contractors to register for a webinar PSNC is hosting on the 2018/19 Flu Vaccination Advanced Service on Wednesday 15 August at 7.30pm.
