'Think pharmacy' urges chief executive
The Independent Pharmacy Federation is calling for greater pharmacy involvement in the NHS 111 patient helpline service.

Warning that community pharmacy is being underutilised, the IPF's chief executive, Claire Ward, is arguing that more pharmacy involvement in the NHS 11 service would help integrate GP and pharmacy services.

Ms Ward has called on the government to 'Think pharmacy' as it responds to the decision of NHS Direct to withdraw from contracts to supply services to eth NHS 111 helpline.

"The reorganisation of NHS Direct to NHS 111 direct has been a disaster," she said. "Across the country we will now see people worried about where to turn when they need advice. We know the hospitals cannot cope with added demand as a result of the loss of confidence in the helpline. As the government considers what to do next it should be thinking about how to involve community pharmacy in its plans.”

The IPF points out that consideration is being given to how GP out-of-hours services can pick up some of the loss from NHS Direct, and GPs have asked to be allowed to provide additional care.

"Pharmacy can provide assistance with the minor ailments, support with long term conditions, access to emergency medication and other concerns that people may have," said Ms Ward.

"In partnership with GP out-of-hours services, this could be an efficient way to deliver support to the public and minimise the number of people who will arrive at A&E when they do not need to.

"Community pharmacy is underutilised in the delivery of services and this would be a great way to integrate GPs and Pharmacy, potentially leading to a much more rounded healthcare service."
