Joint letter calls on Department of Health to act
GP and pharmacy organisations have jointly raised concerns over services that potentially could involve prescription direction.

In a joint letter, PSNC, Pharmacy Voice and the BMA's General Practitioners Committee have called on the Department of Health to "urgently consider the impact of current schemes that encourage, or have the potential to be associated with, prescription direction, and how these can be best dealt with."

The letter follows a statement released in October 13 which reminded GPs and pharmacists about existing guidance on prescription direction. This is the term used to describe where a GP practice directs a patient to take their prescription to a certain pharmacy for dispensing. This scenario is not allowed, and patients should have "a free choice between any community pharmacy and in some cases, a GP dispensary".

This latest letter, sent to the Community Pharmacy Implementation Manager at the DoH, is "concerned about a number of schemes that encourage, or have the potential to be associated with, prescription direction.

"One of the schemes in question proposed that a practice could be paid a substantial sum through a share in the business delivered through their surgeries."

Not only could this be classed as prescription direction, but might also impact on rent abatement under the Premises Costs Directions, implying there are both regulatory issues and a potential income loss, says the letter.
