A Pre-Foundation Programme giving pharmacy students access to guidance and tools to support their development as pharmacists while studying has been announced.

The British Pharmaceutical Students Association and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society will work on the project which will be aligned to the Society’s existing development programmes: the RPS Foundation Programme and the RPS Faculty. It is hoped the programme will also give pharmacy students “the opportunity to market themselves to future employers as unique individuals who are committed to their professional and personal development.”

A Pre-Foundation framework will be at the core of the student programme, and will be designed to “complement undergraduate programmes and enable students to develop key knowledge, skills and behaviours that they can apply to course assignments, practical assessments, projects, and most importantly prepare them for workplace based placements and pharmacy practice.”

Lottie Bain President of the BPSA said: “Building a sustainable reflective resource optimised for our members will undoubtedly accelerate the professional development of tomorrow's pharmacists.”

The BPSA has also awarded Honorary Life Membership to Alliance Healthcare UK non-Executive Director Mike Smith. A commendation from former BPSA Noel Wicks said that Mr Smith had given the BPSA “decades of support in the form of an unwavering belief that pharmacy students will shape the pharmacy landscape of tomorrow. This has been backed up by actions that demonstrate this belief.”

Mr Wicks added: “His ability to gather support from other organizations and companies to help fund things like annual and area conferences, talks and competitions, is extremely commendable. I'm overjoyed that Mike has been recognized as someone who has made a significant contribution to pharmacy students and the BPSA, as they truly embody those things that Honorary Life Members of the BPSA should be.”

Mr Smith commented: “These young people, who are the future of our profession, have a very clear idea of current affairs affecting our industry – from pay cuts to new services and regulatory changes. The pharmaceutical world is exhilarating and challenging, but can also be hugely gratifying. I look forward to continuing to support, encourage and inspire the BPSA’s talented students, who wish to embark upon a career in pharmacy.”
