A new study researching the current and developing scope of pharmacy technicians across is underway.

The study will assess the extent of training available to pharmacy technicians post-qualification that helps them undertake their roles, as well as look at what training and support they consider is required to undertake these roles safely and effectively. The research hopes to identify what roles pharmacy technicians will, or could undertake, as the pharmacy profession evolves.

Dr Jane Sutton, a chartered psychologist working in pharmacy practice teaching and research, and Melanie Boughen will carry out the work for the School of Pharmacy at the University of East Anglia, supported by the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK).

One of the aspects to be considered in the study is the question of who will fill in the gaps left by pharmacists taking on more extended roles as a result of advances in pharmacy practice. “Pharmacy technicians have the potential to be able to do this and, working together with pharmacists and other members of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, provide expert advice and care for patients. This additional expertise can only be of benefit to patients,” said APTUK.

“The results of this ground-breaking research will be used by APTUK, as the professional leadership body, to inform the professional support given to pharmacy technicians and engagement with national and international pharmacy technician strategies and workforce development.”

In addition, APTUK said that the UEA intends to present the findings to the APTUK Professional Committee, at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society conference and will “submit a report to the General Pharmaceutical Council to enhance their evidence base and inform their decision making.”

The UEA is conducting an online survey and is inviting pharmacy technicians to participate.
