People should spend longer washing their hands, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has said. In a new campaign, it is urging the public to spend at least 20 seconds washing their hands to clean them of pathogens.

 The recommendation follows a survey which found that 84% of British adults do not wash their hands for long enough to clean them of the bacteria associated with upset stomachs or pneumonia, or viruses associated with colds and flu.

The survey also found that:

  • 65% of people do not always wash their hands before eating;
  • 50% do not always wash their hands after handling animals, such as pets;
  • 32% do not always wash their hands before preparing food;
  • 21% do not always wash their hands after going to the toilet.

“In addition, 4 out of 10 people did not know that antibiotic resistance is most accurately described as bacteria becoming resistant to the drugs used to treat them,” said the Society

“Effective handwashing is important, as fewer infections mean fewer antibiotics are prescribed. Around 30% of diarrhoea and 16% of respiratory infections can be prevented through handwashing.”

The Society has also produced an “essential guide” to handwashing.
