Pharmacy teams are being encouraged to pledge to become antibiotic guardians during this year’s World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAK). The week runs from November 13-19, and includes European Antibiotic Awareness Day on November 18.

Campaign objectives for WAAK are to:

  • make antibiotic resistance a globally recognised health issue;
  • raise awareness of the need to preserve the power of antibiotics through appropriate use;
  • increase the recognition that individuals, health and agriculture professionals, and governments must all play a role in tackling antibiotic resistance;
  • encourage behaviour change and convey the message that simple actions can make a difference.

Public Health England launched the Antibiotic Guardian campaign to help protect antibiotics and improve knowledge about antibiotic resistance as part of the UK Five Year Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy 2013 to 2018. It launched its ‘Keep Antibiotics Working’ campaign in October “to support the government’s efforts to reduce inappropriate prescriptions for antibiotics.”

PHE is asking “the NHS, local authorities, academic institutions and others to support Antibiotic Guardian to make a big impact by sharing their planned activities, outcomes, pictures, and case studies of their campaigns with the Antibiotic Guardian Chair, Dr Diane Ashiru-Oredope by email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..”

In addition, it is asking supporters to use the #AntibioticGuardian hashtag on social media to promote the campaign. For copies of Tweetable graphics or messages, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Organisations can also choose a pledge to support the campaign and register planned activities for EAAD/WAAW via the Antibiotic Guardian website.

PSNC said: “Healthy Living Pharmacy teams may wish to host a health awareness event/campaign on antibiotic resistance as part of their ongoing health promotion activities. More information on hosting a health awareness event/campaign on antibiotic awareness can be found on the PSNC health promotion ideas page.”
