A new e-learning package on substance use and misuse is now available from the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education.

The package “provides an overview of substances of misuse, harm reduction strategies, holistic care and communicating with different patient groups, as well as the provision of services including supervised administration and needle exchange.”

It comprises four modules:

  • Substances of misuse;
  • Harm reduction;
  • Communication with patients and support networks;
  • Provision of services.

CPPE says the programme will be useful for people completing their Declaration of Competence (DoC) for needle and syringe programme (NSP) and supervised consumption of prescribed medicines.

“The four ‘substance use and misuse’ modules have been repurposed from work created by the Welsh Centre for Pharmacy Professional Education (WCPPE),” said CPPE. “We are grateful to our colleagues for allowing access to this programme and we have altered the programme to refer to English legislation.”

In addition, CPPE has also announced it will run ‘Return to prescribing’ again, in early 2018. The course is intended “for any pharmacist prescriber in England looking to rediscover their prescribing skills and get back into a prescribing role.” It may also be of use for supplementary prescribers who need to meet eligibility criteria for a conversion course.

The programme is delivered over a period of three months with participants needing to attend training days in Manchester on January 21 and 22, and April 24 2018.

“Over the three days you will reflect on your current skills and identify actions, resources and opportunities to address gaps in the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for effective prescribing,” said CPPE.
