The pilot scheme which sees NHS 111 referring patients to community pharmacy to supply medicines in urgent or emergency circumstances will be extended.

The announcement made at NHS England’s Pharmacy Integration Fund meeting last week will mean that the NHS Urgent Medicine Supply Advanced Service (NUMSAS) will continue to be commissioned for six more months after the initial trial period was due to end in March 2018. The extension has been granted to allow further evaluation of the scheme.

“In October 2017, NHS England shared with PSNC a slide set which provides an update on the NUMSAS pilot. The information in the slide set highlights that NHS England will be conducting an interim evaluation report with data analysis this Autumn, and will undertake a qualitative review of the service in Spring 2018,” said PSNC.
