NHS England is urging general practices to consider recruiting pharmacists to work in their practice. 

Applications need to be made by January 19 for this latest wave of recruitment. Providers participating in the ‘Clinical Pharmacists in General Practice’ scheme “will receive funding for three years to recruit and establish clinical pharmacists in their general practices for the long term,” said NHS England.

“The second wave of applications for the clinical pharmacy roll out programme has been assessed and with those announced in the first wave over 1,061 practices, covering nearly 18.5 million patients, will benefit from the skill mix and knowledge that clinical pharmacists bring to general practice.”

A tweet on the NHS England Twitter account at the weekend said: “We are recruiting more clinical pharmacists because they provide leadership on medicines optimisation and quality improvement while contributing to the quality and outcomes framework and enhanced services: http://ow.ly/dbSJ30hwT0R #GPforwardview #GPPharmacists.”

However, community pharmacist Graham Philips has criticised NHS England’s terminology. He has tweeted back: “Why do you persist with the divisive & tautological term ‘clinical’. Say what you mean. Practice Pharmacists.”
