General practice in Northern Ireland has been allocated an additional £8.8 million to boost services, with half the money going to the practice-based pharmacist scheme.

The additional funding takes the GP budget to £22 million for 2018-19. Of the new money, £4.54 million will be used to bring the number of pharmacists working in general practices to 200 by the end of the year.

The Practice Based Pharmacist scheme is regarded as “freeing up GP time and together with community pharmacy is helping ensure the safe and effective use of medicines for better patient care.”

Dr Grainne Doran, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners Northern Ireland, said: “Practice-based pharmacists are now well-embedded into many practices across Northern Ireland. Patients are directly benefiting from this service and pharmacists have been able to help alleviate some of the pressure on GPs.

“Ongoing investment and support for practice-based pharmacists and community pharmacy will be beneficial in enabling better services for patients within the community.”
