The National Pharmacy Association has launched a resource pack on managing diabetes in community pharmacy.

It has been developed “to assist pharmacists and their teams to engage with both patients and commissioners in improving diabetes care in the UK,” says the NPA. “It provides a clinical overview, together with guidance on the types of services that can be offered within the pharmacy.”

The pack is being sent out to community pharmacy member of the NPA, and can be downloaded from the members’ area on the NPA website. Included in the pack are:

•    An introduction to diabetes
•    A clinical overview and clinical considerations
•    Management of diabetic emergencies
•    Prevention of diabetes
•    Fasting for religious reasons
•    Holiday and travel advice
•    Managing complications - footcare
•    Advising during illness
•    Equipment used by patients
•    Patient FAQs
•    MUR/DMR crib sheet
•    NMS crib sheet
•    CMS crib sheet
•    Brief outline on who commissions services (England) and hints and tips for getting a service commissioned

Leyla Hannbeck, the NPA’s Head of Pharmacy Services, said: “This NPA resource pack provides a clinical overview, together with guidance and practical tools to help community pharmacists support people with diabetes and provide relevant pharmacy services. We believe that this comprehensive resource will empower our members to deliver excellent diabetes-related services and to engage pro-actively with service commissioners.”
