Numbers with diabetes continue to rise
New guidance to help support children with type 1 diabetes has been issued in Scotland.

'Supporting Children and Young People with Type 1 Diabetes in Education’ sets out "the responsibilities of local councils, schools, parents and young people." It includes advice on exam planning, injecting and storing insulin, blood glucose monitoring, eating, and physical activity in school.

The document has been issued by the Childhood & Adolescent Subgroup of the Scottish Diabetes Group and Diabetes Scotland and brings together some the best practice and policies from around Scotland.

A survey published as part of Diabetes Week has found that type 1 diabetes is continuing to increase. "The number of people with Type 1 diabetes has increased from 26,294 in 2006 to 29,251 in 2014," an increase of 11.3%, says the report.

Overall, 5.0% of the population in Scotland has been diagnosed with diabetes, of which nearly 237,000 or 88.2% have type 2 diabetes.
