Pharmacy preregistration exam pass rates for 17 pharmacy businesses organisations providing the most preregistration training in 2014-15 have been published.

General Pharmaceutical Council data shows that the success rate in typical community pharmacy settings was 68.8%, with an average of 1.5 trainees per pharmacy offering pre-registration training. In hospitals, the average pass rate was 89.6% with an average of 3.8 trainees per hospital.

However, data on pharmacies offering 12 or more training places shows how success rates varied from below 60% to 100%.

The GPhC has published specific figures as follows:

Owner Pass rate (%) No of trainees
Barnet & Chase Farm Hospitals NHS Trust 82.4 17
Barts Health NHS Trust 87.5 16
Boots UK Limited 79.9 283
Day Lewis Plc 59.1 44
Gorgemead Ltd 73.1 26
H A McParland 69.2 13
Imaan Ltd 64.3 14
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust 90.6 32
Kamsons Pharmacy 100 15
Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust 85.7 14
Lloyds Pharmacy Ltd 73.4 169
NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde 100 14
Pillbox Chemists Ltd 53.8 13
South West Thames RHA 100 14
Superdrug Stores Plc 84.6 13
Tesco Stores Ltd 76.5 17
Well 87.5 24
Total candidates included   738
Total candidates sitting assessment   2811

Pharmacy organisations have queried the accuracy of the data and have criticised the GPhC for publishing it without any context. The GPHC says the numbers are for where the trainee only trained with that provider, and that trainees who trained with more than one provider are excluded from this data.

In addition, the GPhC says it prepared this information in response to a formal request from a registrant. “It is also publishing this data on the website as part of its commitment to share information about our core regulatory functions that may be useful to others.”
